Is there a cure for dyslexia?

Dyslexia is lifelong and cannot be “cured” but with the right support, dyslexic individuals can become highly successful students and adults.

Is dyslexia genetic?

Dyslexia is regarded as being genetic in origin. If one or both parents are dyslexic it is highly probable that their children may inherit similar learning issues.

When should I get my child tested?

An official assessment is costly and although this may be extremely helpful in helping to understand your child’, it is not always necessary. It is recommenced that your child receives at least 6 months of suitable intervention prior to being tested. An official assessment towards the end of secondary school may help to provide accommodations for the child. Intervention is the key to success and this is by far the most important factor to consider with a dyslexic child.

Is it true that you can only diagnose dyslexia at 9-10 yrs?

Dyslexia may become more obvious at 9/10 years (Year 3/4) because this is the age at which independent learning begins, however there are many early warning signs and intervening early will give these children a much stronger start to their learning journey.

With the right support a child with dyslexia can complete school and university very successfully.

Are there accommodations for dyslexic students in secondary school?

With a formal assessment it may be possible to get extra time and assistance in reading instructions for final exams. Generally dyslexic students should be given extra time to complete work as well as simple modified instructions.

What is the difference between balanced literacy and structured literacy?

Balanced literacy uses the whole word approach. Although there is a phonics component, it relies on context and cues. Structured literacy is a ‘bottom up’ approach and teaches the sounds, symbols and spelling rules before moving to meaning. There is scientific evidence confirming that structured literacy is the best approach, however many schools are far behind in this area.

What does it mean if there is a big discrepancy between my child’s verbal and written ability?

An obvious discrepancy between verbal and written work generally indicates dyslexia. Dyslexics should be assessed verbally where possible to ensure their knowledge is correctly measured.
